Exclusive Interview with Powerlifting World Champion
This interview was filmed at the 1st Westside Certification that I recently attended in OH. I sat down with my good friend AJ Roberts and talked to him about his recent meet where he got the 2nd highest total ever – 2825 in the 308 class record’s (1140 sqt, 870 bench, 815 DL).
Before the meet AJ knew he had to change a few things if he hoped to go 9 / 9.
He talked about:
– making the warm-up a priority
– eliminating his elbow pain with more shoulder rehab movements
– activating his glutes to help him finish his deadlift lockout
– the mental preparation and how to turn it on on the platform
At this elite level, the small things make all he difference. We can all learn from AJ and the things he used to achieve his goals.

Fantastic interview, I’ve been a fan of Mike Robertson’s work for a while now and it’s interesting to hear a guy at the top of his game take a step back and assess some basics. I think this whole approach to warm up flexibility and mobility is slowly gathering steam. And the more we hear from elite athletes about the benefits of moving well hopefully it will filter further down the chain.
Awesome interview Smitty. There was a ton of awesome info here. I learned a bunch. AJ – very cool that you went to Mike for some help.
I’ve gotta say the warmups and single leg training that Mike’s helped you with has been huge for my athletes too
Congrats again AJ on the world record.
he looks a bit like Brock Lesnar…but stronger 🙂
